My New Zealand 2017 Itinerary

If you’ve been keeping up on my blog and Twitter, you will know that next year in 2017 I’m heading off to my ultimate bucket list destination: New Zealand!

I booked my flights a few weeks ago in store at STA Travel but am yet to book anything beyond that – although I am 99.9% certain that I’ll buy the Kiwi Experience Tiki pass when it’s next on sale. The Tiki pass has a minimum travel time of 18 days but I have 23 full travel days so check out my itinerary ideas so far below and let me know what you think… (Unless stated otherwise, I’ll just spend one night in each place – a little whistle-stop tour of both islands!)

  • Auckland
  • Hot Water Beach
  • Waitomo
  • Rotorua
  • Taupo – extra night
  • River Valley
  • Wellington
  • Kaiteriteri (via Picton)
  • Westport
  • Lake Mahinapua
  • Franz Josef – extra night
  • Wanaka
  • Queenstown – around 7/8 extra nights
  • Milford Sound (day trip)
  • Lake Tekapo
  • Christchurch

So in a nutshell, I’m pretty much planning to spend the minimum recommended amount of time in each destination, and spend my spare days in Queenstown. This is mainly because having read so many travel blogs and articles on New Zealand, the main consensus seems to be that the minimum time is all that’s needed to do the main activity for the town – so for example, at Hot Water Beach apparently there isn’t much else to do other than visit the beach (the clue is in the name I suppose!) whereas you could be in Queenstown for a year and still not get bored!

Obviously my above plan is subject to change depending on weather/availability of activities on the day etc but I’ll just have to adjust that if I need to when I’m out there.

I’d love to know if any of you guys have been to New Zealand or used Kiwi Experience – leave a comment below or tweet me if you have any feedback/ideas/recommendations for me!

Otago peninsula is in my opinion a must for wildlife watchers, you can see albatross at short distance. I also liked a hike in Abel Tasman National Park. A cruise in the fiords would make a wonderful day. In the Northern Island you can find Tongariro National Park’s landscape awesome.

One more thing in case you like wine: you will find the Pinot Noirs of Central Otago really amazing. You can visit several wineries on a day trip departing from Queenstown

    1. I do enjoy an occasional glass of wine (or two..) so I’ll be sure to check that out, thanks so much!
